What if your workplace was where you first discovered the Zombie virus?

The morning began the same as every other. I made the long journey down a few lonely roads at a time when most of the folks around were sleeping. I arrived my normal fifteen minutes early just in time to catch the coffee pot before it was emptied by my co-workers.

Then I headed down the long stretch past cubicle after cubicle until I saw the dimly lighted space I would call home for the next ten hours. Something seemed a little off this morning. The office was a lot quieter than usual. The few sounds that waffled through the air were more like muffled moans and screeching than the normal gossip I was used to.

Finally, a familiar face was in front of me.

“Have you seen them? It’s weird right?” Frank asked me as I stood there puzzled.

“Seen them? What are you talking about?”

I wondered if Frank was up to another of his office tricks. He was always starting a rumor or proposing a gag to play on the others in the workplace. Was I the recipient this time?

“They said it’s a virus. Everyone is susceptible to it but someone in the office must have been a carrier because there are a lot of people here infected.”

Okay, now I knew he was up to something. What was his hope though, that I would freak out in front of everybody? I wasn’t about to give him the pleasure of that.

“Yeah, okay. I get all worried and then someone jumps out of the closest cubicle hoping I scream or piss my pants right? I’m not falling for it Frank.” I said feeling proud.

No, tell you what. Just go look in the break room. You’ll understand. Don’t go in though, it might not end well.” Frank said more serious than I expected.

“Fine. I’ll play along” I mumbled as I headed toward the break area.

The door was closed which was a bit unusual. Everyone was in and out all day and no one wanted the hassle of opening the heavy wooden door each trip. It was probably all part of Frank’s scheme. The door had a large window I could look in without the need of entering so I figured as soon as I peered through someone was going to jump out or spray something at the window hoping to startle me.

Neither happened. No one jumped, nothing flew at the window but what I saw made my mouth drop. There was Liz, Ronnie and a delivery guy whose name I didn’t know wondering around aimlessly on the other side of the door. At least what used to be them anyway.

Their skin was a weird gray-blue color and their eyes appeared lifeless. I could smell a distinct odor coming from the room the closer I got.

“See, it’s a Zombie outbreak. It’s been on the news.” Frank said to me approaching from behind.

“What are we doing about it?” I questioned quickly.

“Staying out of their way mostly. As long as you don’t get too close or let one bite you it can’t effect you.”

“But, but… What’s going to happen to them?”

“A couple sick days I guess and then back to the grind. Lucky bastards.” Frank’s response made my mouth gape open further than it ever had before.

“What’s going on here? Get back to work you two.” Bossman Bill screeched at us breaking the hope he was one of the affected “All these sickies we are dealing with means there is twice as much work for everyone else. No time to be standing around gawking.”

I scurried away and sat down at my desk contemplating where to start. Should I be worried? Was it just a virus that would pass? All the knowledge I had was from movies, TV and comics and in all of them zombie stories always ended badly.

Then again I really needed this job even if I hated it. I needed to worry about myself and forget all the weirdness around me. The two zombies reaching through the wall from the other side made staying focused awfully difficult.

I kept wiping off my desk as their drool dripped down. I figured I needed to keep the disinfectant handy and luckily, I had always been a bit of a neat freak anyway. I have to say the fact that the office was emptier than usual was a bit of a plus when it came to getting my work done. Even with the threat of a zombie attack I was on a roll. I was pumping out quarterly earnings reports faster than a zombie eats through a brain.

Bossman Bill even stopped by to thank me for my hard work and not freaking out about the whole virus situation. I think it was the first time he had ever said anything positive about my work. All in all it was a pretty great day. Wonder what tomorrow will have in store?

Okay, What If? Challenge

whatifwww

Okay, what if I told you it had been too long since there was a writing challenge, and that after polling the people in the know, erm, that’s you guys, I’ve realised that  inspiration is a little thin on the ground. So here’s the thing, we need something to get our top boxes ticking, and after consultation with the main man Jed, he has given his permission for me to issue forth a challenge.

Now I know you’re all busy, heck I am too, but no one is asking you to sit down and write war and piece, how about if I give you a topic and you just sit down and blog about the first thing that comes to mind for 5 or 10 minutes. Free thought after all is when we are at our most random.

This challenge will run until I remember have time to put the next one up, hopefully next Wednesday, but I am not going to put restrictions on myself, because I only end up getting stressed and eating cookies.

Ok, so the challenge for this week is as follows:

Okay, What if I asked you about public transport?

It’s deliciously random isn’t it, well you can thank Wee Blue Birdie for that. While discussing challenges the other night she issued this one to me as we both use public transport, and I, being kind and generous decided to pass it on.

There is no doubt that at some time in your life you have had to avail of public transport, how did you find it?  anything funny happen? meet anyone funny? have a bad experience? or even weirder still, if you could invent your own method of public transport what would it be? The limits are endless!

Best of luck, and all that we ask is that you put a ping bank (link) to this post in your own. This means that we here at Okay, What If? and also anyone else visiting this post will be able to see your entry easily. If you are unsure how to place a Ping back (link) into your post, click the highlighted word above to find some instructions from WordPress.

Thank you to all my friends who have given me ideas fro future challenges, if you have an idea you would like to share, please feel free to do so.

Looking forward to seeing your entries 🙂 and please feel free to re-blog this post to let others know.

P.s – I just had to resurrect Professor Cat and the original banner, that in itself is a good enough reason to issue a challenge.

What if a pirate I could be?

98-02-february-1st-2015

If a pirate I could be, I’d sail the salty sea

Tossing to and fro until the lookout yells land-ho

We’d make our way aground to see what could be found

Entering the local village to plunder and to pillage

Tales are always told about a treasure chest of gold

But a pirate’s life is gritty and anything but pretty

I could make you walk the plank just for saying I stank

You landlubbiin swine, maybe I’ll take your wine

Rough you up for fun then finish with a pint of rum

The places I would go, the people I would know

If only I could be, it’d be a pirate’s life for me!

Wednesday’s What if? – Writing Challenge 1/14/2015

The alarm at work sounds. Everyone is running around with no purpose. You go racing up the stairs to find out what Is happening and as you reach the top of the stairs your feet fly out from under you.

I Feel Weird

I Feel Weird

Turns out a barrel of toxic waste fell over and spilled out. Why your company is storing toxic waste no one is sure but as you are trying to stand back up you start to feel weird. You look down and realize that you are covered in toxic slime. What happens next?

What if you fell into a large puddle of toxic waste?

Not looking for a lot of realism here, instead hoping for the unreal. Do you become a super powered hero? Villain? A monstrous figure? Shrink to the size of an ant? Grow two extra arms? Split into two people, one good one bad? The possibilities are endless and only limited to your imagination.

Please tag the post whatifchallenge and add a link back to this challenge post.

Next Wednesday there will be a new challenge so please add your response before then. Have fun!

So I got Superpowers. What now?

What if? – The Sunday silly

What if I was jazzy

The right amount of zazzy

If I had the sway

I’d be all the rage today

You couldn’t resist my appeal

It would be so unreal

I would be the cure

And have all the allure

Oh, what if I was cool

And made all the girlies drool

Maybe even a few guys

I would be such a prize

If only I wasn’t a slob

Or not this big ole blob!

Wednesday’s What If? – New Writing Challenge 12/31/2014

It’s late on New Year’s Eve when you hear a knock on your door. You go to it and open the door to find an old, weathered looking man standing in front of you. Before you can ask what he needs he begins to talk.

“It’s time for the new but it can fall back. What you choose you should know will be a renewed track”

“I’m sorry. I don’t understand. What can I do for you.” You ask.

“The decision is not one you should go about lightly, you will continue on path both daily and nightly.”

“Okay this is weird. Do you need me to call you a cab or something.”

“Do not think of things as only a joke, when the calendar changes heed the words I spoke”

And with that the old man faded away into nothing. Was it all a dream? A mid-afternoon aberration?

clock-359985_640

Nope. It was all real. What the old man spoke of was the start of a new challenge for the New Year. On Wednesday I will pose a what if question I want you to answer. You can post and link back, upload a picture that fits the theme, write a poem or just leave a comment right here.

Wednesday’s what if is a free for all, no holds barred writing challenge to bring a little excitement to our day. There are no rules except to have fun and link back if you post on your own site.

Today’s challenge based upon the cryptic messages the old man was spewing?

What if you could relive any year of your life starting on New Year’s day?

The cryptic part of the decision is it would mean you also needed to relive every day of every year from that day on. So has anyone made a mistake they would be willing to relive their lives from a former point to correct. Anyone think if they had it to do over they could do things differently? Anyone not want to even consider it?

Whatever thought the question brings to mind you can let us know. Please tag the post whatifchallenge and add a link back to this challenge post.

Next Wednesday there will be a new challenge so please add your response before then. Happy New Year’s!
