What if I attempted NaNoWriMo?

So am I completely crazy to attempt NaNoWriMo this year? I just started writing a few odd stories and created this blog earlier this year. I have enjoyed it a lot, but also I’ve had an idea in my head for a while now that I thought could make a good screenplay or novel if I just took the time to write it.

One of my presents from Santa last year was the Final Draft screenwriting software. It was purchased for me as a response to my talking up how great a screenplay I thought this story would make. My problem was I discovered I didn’t have the knowledge to write a screenplay, but I still got started trying. I read a bunch of how to’s, but eventually got sidetracked from it around the time I found blogging.

So I noticed the novel writing month and debated whether I could do it. I finally decided that if I tried and failed, worst case I would have some subject matter for my blog. So I signed up and established my info. I’ve written a first chapter for my story and so far have just over 600 words. Only 49,400 to go!

I still plan on trying to post daily on my blog and continue to have great What if challenges throughout the month. Wow, I really have lost it haven’t I? Any motivational speeches you can give would be most appreciated. If I pull off the novel would anyone be interested in a copy? It’s a story that involves aliens, teleportation, government conspiracies, police work and a love story.

I’m hoping I can turn all that into 50,000 or more words. If you’re interested in updates or excerts of the story let me know and I’ll try to post them. Thank you to everyone for the support you’ve already given me over the last few months. If not for this blog and the community here at wordpress I would never have the courage to attempt such a feat.

So here goes nothing. wish me luck!

  1. Answers to your questions:
Question: So am I completely crazy to attempt NaNoWriMo this year?
Answer: Of course not, go for it!
Question: I have really lost it, haven’t I?
Answer: Maybe what you’ve lost is some inhibitions and doubts about yourself. Have you lost your mind/ Of course not! Go for it!
Question: If I put out a novel, would anybody be interested in a copy?
    Answer: Of course!
You asked for luck …. here’s wishing you a lot of it.

    • I’ve always thought about writing a novel or series of short stories. I was in a couple creative writing classes in school but never pursued it. Maybe this was just the boost I needed.

  2. Whoo hoo! Another participant. 🙂

Okay, could be writing partners in lunacy? 😉

I too took the plunge and am going for it.

I think the focus should be on just getting the writing done. It’s supposed to be a first draft – so why not?

As for the time end of things – I figured – for myself at least, that I would prioritize, especially in the blogging world. I may read a bit less, and personally post a bit less, but this is because I really want to give it an honest shot.

I don’t expect anything from myself – other than the commitment – and the ability to write a story. As for the 50 000 words – I’m aiming for it.

If you decide to share some of your efforts, here or perhaps on a “private test blog” I’d be more than interested in reading.

As for comments and evaluations? Well, that would be up to you to decide what type of input you are looking for. I can promise that I would be honest and as “gentle” but constructive as I could. Remember, these are drafts, right?

I’m participating and will some time this week post on my blog about it – also giving info. about whether I’m going to share to some, for evaluations and help, when I have decided.

So cheers to you! And great luck that you may be successful and content with the process 🙂

    • Glad to know I’m not the only one to take the plunge in our little community. Congrats on your decision and good luck. I agree with your thoughts, first draft so just go for it. I’ve made it to the third chapter and 2600 words so far and am about to get started for today. Thank you as well for your offers, I may take you up on it with my draft. Will let you know. I reciprocate the offers as well, willing to help if needed.

        • Wow, that’s awesome. I knew Rob’s been talking about a novel he wanted or was already working on but not that he was participating. Must have somehow missed it but great to know. I’m off to write

        • He’s posted about it – on his blog – recently – I just read it today – so within the past 3 days at most? Anyhow, I’m sure you’ll wander over when you have time.

Hope the inspiration moves you to great things 🙂

What are your thoughts? What if you shared them?
